St. Joachim Retirement Facility

The St. Joachim Retirement Facility in St. Joachim, Ontario, was thoughtfully designed to meet the evolving needs of an aging population by creating a safe, inclusive, and uplifting environment for residents. Conceived as a single-storey structure adjacent to an existing retirement complex, the facility accommodates 25 residents across a mix of single, double, and fully barrier-free bedrooms in six unique layouts. Designed to serve a diverse range of individuals—from those living with Alzheimer’s disease, to seniors requiring minimal supervision, to adults in need of supportive residential care—the project prioritizes flexibility, accessibility, and comfort. Clerestory windows strategically positioned throughout bedrooms, gathering spaces, corridors, and dining areas maximize natural light, creating warm and welcoming interiors while reinforcing connections to the surrounding community.

At the heart of the design is a central amenity core, which extends outward to frame a landscaped garden, ensuring every resident enjoys both a calming view and direct access to nature. The facility integrates a full suite of amenities, including adaptive bedrooms, barrier-free washrooms and bathing facilities, a commercial kitchen, medical office, laundry services, administration areas, and on-site parking. A central lounge provides a social hub, visually and physically linking the two wings of the building while opening directly to the garden. Di Maio Design Associates led the project from conception through completion, overseeing site planning, regulatory approvals, schematic and interior design, cost estimating, and construction documentation.
